Solitary dolphin causes excitement and concern

The lone bottlenose dolphin that has been frequenting the marina at Maryport, Cumbria for some time now is attracting a huge amount of public and media attention however animal welfare organisations, like the Marine Connection, have concerns for its’ future.
The dolphin (named Marra by the locals), has been monitored closely over the past couple of weeks by our colleagues at British Divers Marine Life Rescue. Initial concerns were that the dolphin may be injured or suffering from illness however, the animal has been observed chasing/catching fish, diving and swimming in the wake of boats entering and leaving the marina and therefore appears to be healthy. The hypothesis now is that the dolphin may have become “lost” after entering the marina as there is the possibility that its’ echolocation is bouncing off the marina walls and he animal does not realise the gate opens into the open ocean, if this is the case the dolphin may require assistance in order to leave the marina.
It is vitally important that boat users and the general public are made aware of how to act around the dolphin to ensure its’ protection, after all dolphins are protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, and as such, any individual found harassing or endangering the animal would be committing an illegal act, and liable to prosecution. In the meantime the dolphin continues to be closely monitored, and a comprehensive rescue plan is being put in place by BDMLR should this become necessary if the animal looks to be endangered from food deprivation, human impact or boat traffic.
Thanks to all concerned at British Divers for all their very hard work and commitment to the welfare of this animal over the past few weeks, in the meantime, the Marine Connection will continue to liaise with them in case any additional assistance is required to ensure the dolphins’ welfare and protection.
