Whale beached off the Bahamas

A group of scientists were in Andros recently in an effort to discover what caused a massive sperm whale to beach itself and die on a shallow bank in Behring Point, an event that attracted hundreds of residents and curious onlookers.

However another whale was also found yesterday in the area with what appeared to be large shark bites all over its body, similar to the bites found on the body of the sperm whale discovered in Andros. It is not clear yet if there was any connection between the two deaths.

Teams of scientists from Atlantis’ Marine Mammal facility and the US Naval
base, AUTEC [Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Centre] took samples from the sperm whale including pieces of the heart, lungs, intestines and eardrum for further analysis. The beaching of the sperm whale was the fifth to have occurred in the area within the last year.
