How you can help stop the suffering
In October 2006, Iceland announced its' resumption of commercial whaling and since then has killed many whales, claiming that whales should be killed in order to protect the country's fish stocks for human consumption. There is no credible scientific evidence to support such claims, given that the marine food chain is complex and any reduction in one predator will simply lead to an increase in another.
Due to the resumption, Marine Connection, in association with Campaign Whale launched a public awareness campaign calling on major UK fish retailers to stop buying Icelandic seafood until the country stopped its whaling. The UK is a major export market for Icelandic seafood and 30,000 postcards were distributed nationally, targetting the 2 largest supermarkets.
Modern whaling can never be considered anything other than grossly inhumane. Therefore, the Marine Connection is calling on its supporters to help stop the whaling once and for all. If we don't all act now, many whale species could be once again brought to the brink of extinction.
Iceland's Fisheries Minister Einar K. Guofinnsson has issued a quota of 40 minke whales for 2008.
