Threats to these marine mammals are on the increase; almost 1,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die daily in fishing nets and each year, up to 20,000 dolphins and small whales are slaughtered in Japan. Wild dolphins are still captured for display in marine parks or to participate in dolphin swim programmes worldwide - many in appalling conditions.
