Good news for Mexico's marine life
After more than six years of campaigning to stop marine life being caught in shark nets, our colleagues at Comarino in Mexico, led by Yolanda Alaniz, have persuaded President Felipe Calderon to approve the new regulation - "NOM 020, responsible fishery of sharks and rays".
The regulation includes the prohibition of finning and dumping of sharks at sea, the catch of endangered species such as the great white or whale shark. It will give protection to shark breeding sites and critical habitats such as San Ignacio will also benefit as sharks nets will not be allowed in this area. This is terrific news as not only does this mean that the lives of whales will be saved but also many sea lions who are also often caught through this fishery.
However some of the fisheries are now lobbying to have this regulation reversed and we need your help to make sure they don't! Please email President Calderon, congratulating him for supporting the new regulation.
This is such a great step forward in the protection of all marine life in Mexico, that the Marine Connection urge all our supporters to politely ask President Calderon to ensure that this new regulation is upheld.
