Airline drop dolphin charters
The Marine Connection is delighted to report that United Parcel Service (UPS), one of America's large cargo air transport service which owns the cargo jet that recently transported seven live dolphins from the Solomon Islands to the Philippines has decided not to ship any live dolphins from the Solomon Islands in the future.
UPS made the decision following pressure from a coalition of animal welfare groups which includes the Marine Connection, reminding the company that their charter policy does not allow them to carry live animals taken from the wild to any aquarium or zoo. UPS said they did not realise that the dolphins they transported were wild caught. Marine Connection Director and Co-founder Margaux Dodds comments; "UPS has a policy not to transport wild/live animals. The Marine Connection has been working alongside colleagues worldwide in an effort to persuade UPS to abide by its policy, and as such are delighted with this outcome".
SkyAirworld, a scheduled and charter airline based in Brisbane, Australia are set to redevelop the Anuha Island Resort in the Solomon Islands in the near future. However the company have confirmed they would not be promoting any captive dolphin programmes and will deal with ethical eco-tourism only on the islands.
