Solomon Islands to continue dolphin captures and exports

The Solomon Islands can continue to export dolphins it has been decided at the latest CITES Animal Committee meeting in Geneva.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) took the action following a submission by Israel to review the trade in dolphins from the Solomon Islands. Unfortunately, the Committee felt that, despite evidence provided, the Solomon Islands had complied with CITES requirements and can continue to export dolphins.

The Marine Connection are very concerned over this decision and remain convinced these captures and exports should be stopped. As such, the charity will continue to support and participate in several actions which will be taken in the future by all concerned parties against these captures, including a scientific workshop in the Solomon Islands region hosted by IUCN to address the science that would be needed to make a valid non detriment finding in respect to the local dolphin population.
