Both parties innocent in whaling collision

A report just released shows that Australian maritime authorities have been unable to conclude who caused the collision between the Japanese whaling ship, Shonan Maru 2 and Sea Shepherd's trimaran, Ady Gil, the latter being sliced in half.

The Japanese government has refused to co-operate, declining to participate in the investigation, saying any information it had might be needed for an inquiry by its own authorities. Sea Shepherd claims the whaling ship had turned at the last minute and headed directly for the Ady Gil, Japanese authorities blame the Ady Gil saying it slowed suddenly while crossing in front of the Shonan Maru. Video footage has proved inconclusive.

However, the Japan Coast Guard is considering launching a criminal case over allegations of sabotage, the Australian Federal Police is currently conducting a separate investigation into the claims at the request of the Japanese government and New Zealand authorities are also investigating the collision. The NZ findings will be made public once they are completed.
