Update on fate of Bayworld dolphins
 |
In October 2008 Marine Connection reported that plans were underway to capture dolphins from the wild to secure the future of Bayworld details here. |
Since that time we have supported the work of our colleagues at Dolphin Action and Protection Group in Cape Town in an effort to ensure these captures were not authorised. It would appear however that the facility were making other plans for the two remaining dolphins at Bayworld, as news has recently been received that the dolphins, Domino and Dumisa, are to be sent to Ocean Park, Hong Kong on breeding loan.
Marine Connection Director Margaux Dodds comments; "It is very concerning that Bayworld and the Municipality appears to have simply found another way to solve their dolphin issue, following international furore over the planned capture of wild dolphins to re-stock the facility. Although exact details of the 'deal' with Ocean Park were not known, it was feared that this move meant the two dolphins would either be returned to Bayworld at a later date or any offspring would be traded to replace them; this appears to have been confirmed in comments made by representatives of Bayworld in recent news reports."
