Endangered Susu dolphin sold at local market

A dolphin from the endangered Ganges river population was sold at a local market in Behrampore, India.

It was reportedly caught in the net of a local fisherman who, instead of releasing the dolphin, decided to take it to the market for sale. Sadly it appears that the slow reaction of local police to the incident cost the dolphin it’s life as it was alive when they arrived at the marketplace, but they did not confiscate the animal or arrest the fisherman. Later officials from the Forestry Department arrived but the fisherman had already gone, although a case has been registered against him.

The animals’ body is now being subjected to an autopsy.
