Mahia dolphin lends a helping fin

The dolphin which has been frequenting an area around Mahia in New Zealand and has become known locally as Moko, appeared very interested in efforts being made to refloat two pygmy sperm whales on Monday 10 March.

The NZ Department of Conservation were called out when a mother and calf stranded on the south end of Mahia beach, they had for some time been attempting to refloat the mother and calf which had become very disorientated, when Moko swam alongside and appeared to be attempting to guide them past the sandbar and back out to deeper waters.

It is hoped that this is one rescue indeed has a happy ending as the whales have not restranded.
