New calf good news for 'J' pod

Exciting news - a newly born orca has been spotted with J pod. Orca Network say the calf probably came into the world Monday or Tuesday this week (5/6 November 2007), joining the close-knit J pod group and has been designated the ID number J-43, reflecting its group and the next available number in sequence.

The calf's mother appears to be J-14, a 33-year-old female named Samish, who is believed to have four other offspring. J14 (born 1974) and brand new baby J43, nestled between mum and J30 - J14's 12 year-old son. Seen on 6 November 2007 near Lagoon Pt., Whidbey Island, less than 24 hours post birth. J43 is J14's fifth known offspring.
