See Red!

The Red Sea is a very popular destination.  The promotion and advertising of holiday destinations bordering the Red Sea focus predominantly on the wealth of marine life and coral reefs which this environment can offer.    In addition, the Red Sea is home to several populations of wild dolphins.

However, there is one major incongruity apparent in Sharm El Sheikh which contradicts all the advertising and betrays the wildlife which can so easily be viewed in the Red Sea .  That inconsistency is the captive dolphin facility, Dolphinella.  With three captive dolphins, one which was wild caught, the Marine Connection has had concerns about the facility's conditions since it opened , and after consulting with the Egyptian authorities, had two beluga whales which were being kept in appalling conditions confiscated .

The diving community also feels very strongly against keeping dolphins in captivity in the Red Sea area and the Marine Connection has joined forces with Sport Diver magazine to further promote the campaign.    The charity's "See Red" stickers were inserted into the July 2006 issue of Sport Diver, and we are asking divers to stick these on their dive tanks/bags to help support the campaign to make Sharm a "Captive Dolphin Free Zone".    The Marine Connection will also be distributing these stickers to other dive centres and companies supporting the campaign worldwide but we are also asking our supporters and the general public to show their support.  So, if like us, you also believe dolphins do not belong in captivity here's what you can do to help.

James Mason "Sees Red" in Sharm el Sheikh!

Marine Connection supporter, James Mason (left), visited Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt taking with him 2000 See Red! stickers to help raise awareness of the recent Marine Connection campaign to highlight the plight of captive dolphins in the Red Sea area. Local dive companies have been giving out the stickers and James has reported that many Egyptian taxis are displaying the stickers proving that the local community are as opposed to Dolphinella and captive dolphin facilities in the Red Sea as we are! A big thank you goes to James for all his hard work and support!
