Join us for Japan Dolphin Day 2008
On Wednesday 3rd September, marine conservationists and concerned individuals will be gathering in cities worldwide, as part of a peaceful international protest against the annual Japanese hunts.
 |
The Marine Connection, as co -ordinators of the UK event, will be joined by other animal welfare organisations and concerned members of the public, to protest against the cruel and barbaric slaughter of more than 20,000 dolphins, small whales and porpoises in Japanese hunts and their capture for sale to marine parks. |
Not only are Japan responsible for the largest annual direct kill of dolphins in the world, the meat from slaughtered whales and dolphins is processed and distributed to supermarkets. It is also included as part of the school lunch programme throughout Japan, posing a real danger to the Japanese public. Studies have shown that dolphin and whale meat in Japan is contaminated with toxic chemicals, such as mercury, methyl-mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and that repeated consumption of contaminated meat can have serious health consequences, especially for pregnant women and children. Despite being aware that the level of mercury in the meat is much higher than the maximum safe limit set by Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare, the Japanese government and supermarkets issue no warnings regarding this, and sales of meat continue.

By taking a moment to add your name to the petition which will be handed into the embassy on the day of the protest, you will be sending a direct appeal to the Japanese Ambassador for these hunts to stop and put an end to the slaughter and suffering of thousands of cetaceans and continuing the threat to the health of the Japanese public via sales of contaminated meat.
