Whaling Season in Iceland

A total of 110 whales, 46 minke whales and 64 fin whales, have been caught during the current whaling season in Iceland, according to information from the Directorate of Fisheries.

The quote was set for 200 minke whale and 150 fin whales but Managing Director of the Association of Minke Whalers, Gunnar Jonsson said reaching the quota was not the goal. Whale meat is comparatively cheap in Iceland compared to other meats so most of the catch has been sold fresh at the local marketplaces and supermarkets. Iceland are still stating that some of the meat may still be exported to Japan but the Director of Asian Trading Company Limited in Japan, the main importer of whale meat from Iceland, said the company will not buy any whale meat from Iceland this year.
