58 pilot whales die in New Zealand beach stranding

58 pilot whales have died after beaching on remote Karikari Beach in northern New Zealand.

The animals stranded during the night which is why so many died before they were discovered. New Zealand frequently sees several mass whale strandings around its coastline and to date no one has solved the question of why they do so.

New Zealand has one of the world's highest of whale strandings.Since 1840, more than 5,000 strandings of whales and dolphins have been recorded around the New Zealand coast.
