Pilot whale headed for SeaWorld

The last pilot whale remaining in the Florida Keys since a mass stranding nearly four months ago is to be transferred to SeaWorld of Orlando, the company recently received approval to provide a permanent home for the whale – apparently deemed non-releasable.

The whale has been under care at the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo since it stranded back in May, a calf that was also at the MMC was driven SeaWorld's new stranded-animal facility in late July, and continues to recover but no doubt will also be deemed non-releasable. A pod of 23 pilot whales stranded but most died at the scene, two males were released. The two females, are the only other survivors. SeaWorld is the only marine-mammal facility in North America with pilot whales in its collection.
