First response whale and dolphin rescue training

The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service are to run a free first response whale and dolphin rescue training course due to Tasmania being a 'hot spot' for mass whale and dolphin strandings in Australian wates, and a quick and well informed response usually achieves the best possible outcome for the stranded animals.

An example of this was recently when eight dolphins were safely returned to the ocean recently following efforts by local community members who went to their rescue along with Parks and Wildlife Service staff. The course includes theory and practice such as knowledge of whale and dolphin biology, why they strand and how they can be helped. A beach session will involve learning what to do when strandings occur plus the use of whale rescue equipment including mats and pontoons.
