Lake proves problem again for dolphins

For the second time in seven months dolphins have become stranded in a man-made lake in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. This second incident involving a mother dolphin, her week old premature calf and one year old sibling, has resulted in calls for the entrance to the lake to be barricaded to protect vulnerable wildlife.

Prospect Lake is entered via a narrow channel and the dolphins appear to be having difficulty in finding their way out and the low salinity in the lake could pose a danger to the dolphins' welfare as exposure to fresh water for any length of time results in dehydration, skin disease and also possible renal failure.

Plans are underway for local wildlife officers to attempt to herd the dolphins to a corner of the lake where they can be captured and then released back into the ocean, however as there are two young calves involved this will not be without risk.
