Dolphins wash ashore in Phuket

On Sunday 1 July a female spinner dolphin washed ashore at Karon Beach, Phuket. Attempts to refloat her were unsuccessful and the dolphin was removed to a more sheltered beach along to the coast for another attempt, however she appeared too weak to swim away and was removed to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC). Tests carried out by staff there confirmed that the animal was very weak and perhaps suffering from a lung infection.

This morning (2 July 2007), a female striped dolphin was discovered on the beach, also showing signs of respiratory infection but this animal was also covered in lesions. Both dolphins are currently being held at PMBC pending further tests, although it is unlikely both animals are suffering from the same infection due to the difference in species, however blood tests which have been conducted will provide more detailed information when analysed.
