**Update 10.08.11**
Further to our previous report (below) we are saddened to confirm that the baby humpback whale once again stranded and has had to be euthanised, it was confirmed that the earlier sighting of a young whale and its mother was not this particular animal. Everyone involved in the rescue operation gave the humpback the best chance of survival by getting him into the ocean but sadly it wasn't to be for this young whale.

Hope for a young whale

There are hopes and optimism that a baby humpback whale rescued in a marathon operation on the Gold Coast, Australia recently has survived and been reunited with his mother.

A day after the whale was re floated, a mother and calf was filmed close to the location where the rescued animal was last seen. The young whale got entangled in a shark net after its first attempt to swim back out to sea after stranding, a rescue team was quickly put in place and after being on the beach for over 10 hours, it was still strong and alert - giving the rescuers a thrashing tail fluke at times!

Thousands gathered to wave the whale off safely back into the ocean. It could survive up to five days without feeding so the charity is hoping that the older whale seen was indeed this young calf's mother and they are now both back safe in deeper water and we don't receive the news it has stranded once again.
