Marine Connection 2008 cetacean exhibition in the Outer Hebrides

Recognised internationally for their environmental importance, the Islands of the Outer Hebrides have an abundance of sealife. The Marine Connection educational exhibition on Benbecula, which lies between the Islands of North and South Uist, focused on dolphins, whales and porpoises and was based at Nunton Steadings, a renovated eighteenth century building - one of the oldest and most historically interesting buildings in the area.

Descriptive panels highlighted various cetacean related issues including a section on identification of key species of whales and dolphins seen in surrounding waters. Of course being one of a chain of islands, marine litter is also very much an important issue for Benbecula therefore the exhibition also included a section on marine litter which poses a threat these marine mammals.

Also on display, whale and dolphin models and skeletons and a public interactive section. The primary objectives of this Marine Connection exhibition were to increase the knowledge and understanding of both locals and visitors on porpoises, dolphins, whales and marine environment around the Outer Hebrides in general, which in turn will help to encourage the appreciation and protection of these magnificent marine mammals.
