Brief examples of our educational outreach programmes

The Marine Connection undertake various educational/awareness projects in many countries - bringing people and wildlife together through enjoyable and positive learning programmes.

Our project in South Africa introduced young people to a world that many were unaware of. Our educational camps helped bring them closer to nature - for many it was the first time they had seen a lighthouse, the ocean or a starfish. The charity also assisted with the development of a long-term educational programme in Kenya, working alongside Global Vision the Marine Connection supplied educational materials on dolphin and whale conservation relating to species seen regularly around the Kenyan coastline.

In Peru, approximately 33% of Pucusanas are younger than 15 years old but public schools generally cannot comply with the need for environmental education due to lack of funding, lacking basic educational materials such as fact sheets. Children are the future and this is what makes projects like this so important. Through funding this project, hundreds of children are much more aware about dolphins, whales and the importance of protecting them and their marine environment.

The charity also conducted an important educational project in the Moray Firth area of Scotland, visiting schools, youth and adult groups hosting marine wildlife workshops. As a result of these, thousands of children are more aware of how fortunate they are in the north of Scotland to be able to encounter wild dolphins and how they can help protect them. Our educational work is specifically designed to raise awareness in order to effect a positive change now and in the future.

Recognised internationally for their environmental importance, the Islands of the Outer Hebrides have an abundance of sealife. In 2008, the Marine Connection ran a successful educational exhibition on the island of Benbecula, which lies between the Islands of North and South Uist. Descriptive panels highlighted cetacean related issues including identification of key species of whales and dolphins seen in surrounding waters and threats such as marine litter. Also on display were whale and dolphin models/ skeletons and a public interactive section. The primary objective of the exhibition was to increase the knowledge and understanding of locals and visitors on porpoises, dolphins, whales and the marine environment around the Outer Hebrides.
